It is with great pleasure that we announce an historic victory against the Limpopo Department of Education, which was ordered by the Seshego Equality Court to pay R60 000 in compensation to Nare Mphela last week.
The case was taken to the Seshego Equality Court by Iranti, as Nare faced severe discrimination for her gender identity from her school principal, who Nare claimed had instructed other students to provoke her, particularly in the school’s restrooms.
It is our hope that this case, despite having taken three years to yield results, will set a precedent across the country and bring about a push to educate our educators on sensitivity regarding gender diversity.
The full judgement from the Equality Court is due to be released this week. Follow Iranti as we continue to document the outcomes thereof, or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
