“Critically Queer” celebrates sexuality, gender identity in Africa

Johannesburg, 10-17 September 2013. Critically Queer is an exhibition coordinated by Iranti-org, a Lesbian, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming human rights and visual media organization.

This exhibition challenges and explores through visual arts and documentary forms, ways in which sexuality and gender don't conform to traditional norms, and the abuse faced by those non-conforming.

This exhibition forms part of a larger festival at the University of Johannesburg called, THATSOGAY.

Critically queer, invites you to come observe and interpret various forms of queerness, and to bring into question our present state of sexual and gender expressions.

“This exhibition is a conscious journey by artists and activists who understand and experience the daily struggles of not conforming to oppressive sexist and homophobic systems. It is in the various forms of visual media that we can bring new constructions related to our gender identity, our sexuality, our bodies, the boundaries that are enforced and the daily violations faced as we navigate space and time,” says Jabu Pereira, the executive director of Iranti-org and curator of the exhibition.

November 2013

Johannesburg. Critically Queer is a provoking exhibition on so many levels. The gallery space has been a space that queers controversially inhabit. There is a tension between the space and the queer intention. Our lives as exhibited are staged and appear on a stage. (Zethu Matebeni)
