2013 workshop with Dr Jian Chen

INVITATION

Queer and Transgender
Social Change Approaches using New Media
with Dr Jian Chen

Iranti-org is an African indigenous non-profit human rights organization, working
on Lesbian, Transgender and Intersex media reporting. Iranti-org will host Dr Jian Chen,  a Professor of English from the Ohio State University.

Dr is an independent curator, a media and arts activist. Chen’s work explores the technological and social conditions that shape today’s Transgender, Queer, and gender non-conforming media highlighting strategies used in transnational, diasporic, and inter-racial American media work.

Join us for a day of viewing critically important material presented by Dr as well as work from Iranti-org.

He will be screening media work samples by Tanwarin Sukkhapisit, titled It Gets Better. Tanwarin Sukkhapist is a katoey, a transgender person from Thailand. He is a film maker and won the R.D. Pestonji Award.

Our second screen is the latest film by Yoruba Richen’s titled The New Black. “The New Black is a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda.”

You can view the trailer at http://www.newblackfilm.com/trailer/. Yoruba, previously filmed in South Africa, and her work Promised Land received great reviews and contributed towards a larger dialogue.

Iranti-org will share its own work on LGBTI documentation, and using media to advance social justice within South Africa.

Iranti-org invites you to join us for the screenings and a discussion on new and innovative media initiatives on the 8 August 2013. 13:00-18:00. Come for the day, or attend part either way, it’s going to be amazing.
